Remarkable Landscape Architects

Diana Balmori

New York-based Diana Balmori is a noted landscape scholar and author and is the design principal of the landscape and urban design firm Balmori Associates in New York City. She teaches courses in Landscape at Yale University and currently holds a joint appointment with its Schools of Architecture as well as its School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Before founding Balmori and Associates in 1990 Ms. Balmori worked as a partner for landscape at Cesar Pelli and Associates.
Ms. Balmori has been recognized for her work with grants and awards from various institutions, including the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Institute of Architects. She has participated in numerous exhibitions and conferences and served as a juror in several design competitions. Ms. Balmori is also widely published. She is co-author of several books, including Saarinen House and Garden: A Total Work of Art; Redesigning the American Lawn: A Search for Environmental Harmony; and Beatrix Ferrand's American Landscapes: Her Gardens and Campuses; as well as the author of numerous articles.
Ms. Balmori did her undergraduate work in architecture at the University of Tucuman in Argentina, received her Ph.D. in Urban History, with highest honors, from the University of California at Los Angeles, and studied landscape design at Radcliffe College.

George Hargreaves is the Design Director of Hargreaves Associates, a professional consulting firm comprised of landscape architects and planners with offices in San Francisco, California, Cambridge, Massachusetts, New York City, and London. Under his design direction, Hargreaves Associates has received 34 national awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), six from the American Institute of Architects (AIA), five from the Waterfront Center, and three from Progressive Architecture. His work, and the work of Hargreaves Associates, have been and continue to be published and exhibited nationally and internationally. Mr. Hargreaves was an artist in residence at the American Academy of Rome in 2009. He taught at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University for 20 years, tenured there for 12 years, and served as the chairman of the Department of Landscape Architecture from1996 to 2003. He is the co-editor and author of “Large Parks,” a book that explores large urban parks in depth as complex cultural spaces, where key issues of landscape discourse, ecological challenges, social history, urban relations, and place-making.

Thomas Balsley

Thomas Balsley, FASLA, is the principal designer of Thomas Balsley Associates, best known for its practice of landscape urbanism within our public parks, which make evident Thomas Balsley’s deeply held belief that our parks are among society’s truest forms of democracy.
Thomas Balsley’s reputation has been built by creating public spaces that enhance and enrich the lives of the individuals and communities who inhabit them. His practice includes design at a range of scales, including landscape architecture, urban design and site planning. With over 35 years of experience, a broad and balanced portfolio of award-winning attests to his ability to manage the intricacies of the public review process, multiple client interests and challenging budgets and schedules without compromise to design quality.
Mr. Balsley is a graduate of Syracuse University and the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. His lectures and teachings have extended to universities around the world including Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, the University of Pennsylvania, the National Building Museum and Seoul National University.
Among a number of local and international works, his notable projects include Leeum Museum in Seoul, Gate City Park in Tokyo, Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles as well as Gantry Park, Riverside Park South and Chelsea Waterside Park, in New York City. Recent international design competitions won include the Magok Waterfront and the National Ecological Center in Korea, and Kasumi Plaza in Tokyo. In New York City alone, Mr. Balsley has designed more than 100 public parks and plazas; In an unexpected gesture of recognition for Mr. Balsley’s contribution to New York City’s public realm, a park he designed on 57th Street was renamed Balsley Park in his honor.
